Abstract

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the sexual knowledge, attitude and activity according to sexual satisfaction of husband and wife after hysterectomy.

Methods : A mail questionnaire survey was conducted for 120 married couples (240 subjects) from August 11 to October 9, 2000. The study subjects were randomly selected from the patients who had hysterectomy for benign gynecologic diseases at a university hospital in D city between March 1999 and June 2000 and age between 30 and 59 years old. The response rate was 71.7%. Incomplete questionnaires were excluded and questionnaires of 81 couples were finally analyzed. This study tools used in this study were Sexual Knowledge Measurement of Koo(1996), Sexual Attitude Scales of Hudson et aJ.(1992), Sexual Attitude Measurement of Jang(1989), Sexual Activity Questionnaires of Thiriaway et al (1996) modified and supplemented by advice of experts, and Sexual Function Inventory of Derogatis and Melisaratos(1979) translated by Jang(1984). SPSS 10.0 for Windows program was used for data analysis. Cronbach¡¯s a was calculated to examine the reliability of questionnaire items.

Results : The mean sexual attitude score of husbands was 3.42 and that of wife was 3.25 and the difference was statistically significant(p=0.018), Likewise, sexual activity score of husband (3.36) was higher than that of wife (3.13) and the difference was statistically significant(p=O.OO2). However, the mean scores for sexual satisfaction and sexual knowledge were not significantly different between husbands and wives. All husbands and wives were divided into two groups according to the sexual satisfaction score (below the mean score and above the mean score) and compared the sexual knowledge, attitude and activities according to the sexual satisfaction of the object. Both husbands and wives who had a higher score than mean of sexual satisfaction showed significantly higher scores for all three measurements.

Conclusions : Sexual knowledge, activity and attitude were associated with the sexual satisfaction of both husband and wife after hysterectomy. Therefore, a nursing intervention and counseling program after hysterectomy for sexual adaptation needs to be developed according to the level of sexual knowledge, activity and attitude.
